Summer in Phoenix Great for Tucker So Far

Posted By: Alando Tucker
July 3, 2008 4:15 PM

Hey Suns fans, it’s been a busy (not to mention blazing hot) summer, but I wanted to make sure I checked back in with everybody. Things have been great and I’ve really just been trying to put in a lot of hard work.

After displaying his abilities for the Suns during the summer league in 2007, Alando Tucker is ready to return to Las Vegas in 2008.

DJ and I were at the US Airways Center again today, working on a few things with new assistant coach “Thunder” Dan Majerle. Dan will be our summer league coach in Vegas later this month and has been great to work with. He busts our chops a little bit, but he’s making sure we’re ready and we’ve all just been having a lot of fun on the court together.

I’ve talked to pretty much all the guys on the team, most of who are away doing things with their wives and kids. DJ and I are the youngest so we’ve just stayed here in Phoenix for the most part working on our games. Everybody’s excited though and looking forward to working with new head coach Terry Porter and his staff. I wish the best for Mike D'Antoni in New York, but believe change provides opportunity and that’s what I’m preparing myself for right now. One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is the fact that this coaching staff has set the bar very high for us and expect nothing but the best results.

I was playing basketball for Wisconsin when Terry Porter was coaching the Milwaukee Bucks, and with him already having ties as a native of Wisconsin, quickly became familiar with his track record. He’s a hard-nosed, hard-working player and I like to think the same about myself. I’ve always admired Coach Porter, coming from a small college like Stevens Point and working his way to becoming a great NBA player really says a lot about his work ethic. Now he’s expecting the same work ethic out of us and that attitude is why he’s going to get the best out of the guys on this team. I’ve talked with Porter since his hiring and can already see he’s the kind of coach you want to play for in this league.

While there’s been a lot of work on the court for me this summer, I have had a couple of opportunities to get away. I visited some family and had the opportunity to travel to Miami for a photo shoot me and some other NBA players did for Converse. It was me, Dwyane Wade, Kyle Korver, Kirk Hinrich and Udonis Haslem, and we had a lot of fun down there and it went really well.

As far as Arizona itself, I’ve gotten to check out a couple of places I didn’t have time to see during the regular season. I had some family in town - some of them visiting Arizona for the first time - and we all went to Sedona and had a great time. More recently, I checked out the Phoenix Zoo, but learned there comes a time in Arizona when it’s a little hot to do anything that requires being outdoors. The animals there definitely knew that - most stayed concealed throughout the day - and I quickly caught on as to why.

Finally, I checked out the NBA Draft the other night and it brought back a lot of memories. The Suns grabbed a couple of great guys in Robin Lopez and Goran Dragic. Robin’s energetic and I can see he’s ready to work. Not sure whether or not Dragic will be here next season, but DJ and I are going to try and reach out to any rookies we have on this team and help make their transitions into the NBA easier.

DJ and I know we are the only rookies this franchise has had in a while and are kind of taking it upon ourselves to help them out. We want to let them know this is a whole different game from a mental standpoint and you’ve got to prepare yourself for that. You may not get a lot of time right away like you’ve always been used to, but you can’t get down. You’ve got to keep working and not allow yourself to get discouraged. I think that’s important for any rookie to understand, especially one coming to a team filled with superstar veterans like the Suns. But no matter what, these guys just need to make sure they stay prepared because you never know when you’re going to be called on to contribute.

Well, it’s been a great summer so far and now it’s all about preparing myself for summer league. I’m going to keep working on the things the coaches ask me to and continue preparing myself for what should be a memorable 2008-09 NBA season. Thanks again for reading and I’ll check back in soon.

Thats what we the fans wont too see you do Mr. Tucker. Keep the intensity up I want too see that against the Lakers, and the other team I hate THE Spurs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! keep up the good work

Big Jake McGrath - Phoenix, AZ
Hope you get more playing time this year. You averaged almost 30 in the D-league, hopefully we (Suns fans) can see what you will bring to the court every night.

JeeJax - Philippines
I've been hearing you've developed some perimeter shot there.. With your great attitude and with the support of great development coaches in Igor and Dan, and Terry's sharp recognition of player readiness, I'm pretty sure you'll be up to play regular in the roster sooner or later this season. Keep it up Alando and DJ!..

Anthony Daniels - Chandler, AZ
Alando, it is great to hear that you and DJ are still hard at work not only doing what you love but doing it to be better. Hope you keep it up because I think the playing time for your two is about to go up. Thanks for being yourself and staying grounded. You mentioned about the draft bringing back memories, it's always good to remember where you came from.

Chris Aruelo - Glendale Az
hey nice to see you back and ready.. i really think next season would be your time to shine! i was really surprised when you did not get any playing time at all, with all your credentials in college at least a little time will satisfy me and some other fans. so goodluck and stay healthy!

suns fan+/- - wickenburg
Maybe you should be in the PR department!! you do a great job. Seriously, good luck this year I hope you get a chance to show what you can do!!!

Summer - Flagstaff
hey d.j.,

you said that you went and visited sedona? that's fun! But if you want to cool off a little bit from that valley sun you should pay a visit up here to Flagstaff, AZ. It's really nice and doesn't get near as hot as phoenix in the summer. Just a word of advice though. I hope your summer is great wherever you are!

Caio - São Paulo, Brazil
This season you are gonna be flying Alando, expecting a lot from you. Hope that you'll be able to help the Suns at the 2 or 3 with your athleticism.

Rishi - Spring Hill, TN (originally from Yuma, AZ)
Hey Alando, Tell us about that 42 point outburst you had with the Thunderbirds this year it seems that Suns fans might not know about it, wasnt it a NBDL record? I was a little frustrated that they kept sending you to the D-leagues and that you didnt get that much playing time last year. With a new coach, do you think you will get more time out on the floor? You guys practice hard just like everyone else and I am happy that we have a new coach so that we will have a larger rotation and that you and DJ get to play. How else are we supposed to keep young talent like you around if the team doesnt play you guys? Your thoughts?

Dave - Tempe
Thanks alot Alando, hope to see you comin up big this next season and many seasons afterward.

Stay cool,

Dave

Kenny - Las Vegas
Good luck man! Keep working hard and you will get that opportunity. I plan to watch you and DJ in a game or two in Vegas this month. Good times!

Mylatency - San Diego
Great to hear from you Alando, I hope you get more minutes this year with Terry as head coach and have a relaxing but productive summer with Thunder Dan. Peace, -Mark, Suns #1 fan in San Diego

Antwuan - Atlanta,GA
Whats up Alando

Keep working hard I really see you develop and grow as a young player. I look forward to watching you play in the summer league also with D.J. Strawberry and Robin Lopez its goin to be exciting. I also look forward to see you playing with the Suns in your 2nd season. Dan Majerle will be a great assistant for you and D.J. Strawberry. I can't wait until the Suns 2008-2009 season starts.

Go Suns!!!

arizonatribe - tempe
it's nice getting your perspective on Terry Porter and great to hear you're keeping at it. good luck in the summer games man.

Danny - AZ Gilbert
Hey Alando, good to hear your working hard to get ready for the 08-09 season. I'm looking forward to see you and DJ in the summer league, same goes for the regular season.

SunsRup - Phoenix, Az
Orlando do your work bro! We need you, would like to see some of that skill you showed in the D League! You play that way on a consistent basis and it will be impossible to keep you on the bench! Wish you played more last season so obviously some changes can sometimes be good for everyone! Best of Luck 08-09 and keep your health!

Arno - Leuven
Maybe with the new coach, the suns' rookies and dj and alando can get some playing time too, i understand it's not easy to develop them during the season, but i think it's a thing wich need to be done, even tough sometimes you'd like to see just your players with experience playing. i think developing your rookies is very important for the future of your team. I think mike d'antoni was a very good coach, but didn't quite gave dj and alando the playing time they deserved, as you can see what they realized during the last game of the season, not bad at all.

J-izzle - New Castle, DE
I hope u n D.J get some time out there this yr... I become a fan fav of D.J cuz its good 2 get some youth on our team and i m eager to see what u have in the NBA... ur earned some time after the wait of last yr. I think if u two would have got a little more time last yr maybe we could've gotten a lil further last yr

gerald_german - pateros, philippines
Hi Alando! I believe in YOU as a player and I know that you have the capabilities which can contribute to the Suns to finally achieve an NBA title. I'm looking forward that the major change in the Suns Coaching Staff will be beneficial for you. I hope that this is the break that you've been waiting for to showcase your skills as a swingman that the Suns need not only to backup Grant Hill, but as well as to become his eventual successor. Goodluck to you & the team this upcoming Summer League in Vegas & hopefully that with the change that happened to the Suns, we'll be seeing more playing time for you this upcoming regular season. I believe in you Alando & longlive for the Suns!

abby - rock rapids, iowa
Hey Alando it sounds like your working hard for the up comming season. I can't wait for the new season to start, even if it is three months away.

I just wanted to say that I hope you get to play some this season and that you are a great player!

GO SUNS!!

Ed Love - Dallas, TX
Thanks for the update and the insight. I really like the optimism. I know we gonna see you a lot on the floor this year, you da man! Stay up!

-

WE WOULD BE THE BEST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE!!!!

GO SUNS!!!

Jason Dinh - California
Hey, I really hope you get some playing time next season. I love seeing rookies outplaying veterans. :)

Tara - Ireland
Nice Blog Alondo! #1 fan here in ireland keep up da gd work dude!!

Scott - Portland (about 75 degrees outside)
Welcome to Phoenix in the summer! Your comments remind me of the True Hoops feature on Leandro, when he and his agent found it was so hot outside they ran from where they parked their car to the cool indoors of Scottsdale Fashion Square. Been there, done that. I've also been to the Phx Zoo in the summer ... ;)

I hope the new coaching staff gives you and DJ some minutes on the floor in each game. A few regular minutes from you guys would help the team a lot!

Juan - da phx
Hey man thank you for being a level headed ex rookie man. im a fan. p.s. love the athletisism.

quentin owens - allendale,SC
work hard stay focus and commit yourself to defense I'm pulling for you and DJ to rise.1

Thanks for sharing your thought Alando!!! I hope you and DJ get more time to play and contribute to the team I think you guys have a lot of talent and can help this team be deeper and thus even better.

You got it Alando. I really hope that you and DJ get a lot more minutes this season. I know that you guys really have that talent to produce. Good luck this summer! See ya' next season!

ryan - philippines
hi alando!! anyway im sure you and DJ are the FUTURE player of PHOENIX someday!!

Al - Philippines
I'm pretty sure you'll be getting some minutes this time. I'm definitely wishing a successful season for you, DJ, and the Suns. I'm really curious on what aspect of your game have you been working on? Take care!

Don Williams - Spokane, WA
Hi Alando,

I lived in Phoenix for 31 years and I've been a fan since day one in 1968. I believe that next season, you and DJ will get a great opportunity to play, more than you did your rookie year. You bring a lot of credentials to the Suns and I'm anxious to watch you "swoop to the hoop". After forty years, I'm still looking forward to that first NBA title for the Suns, so my wife and I will be watching and rooting for you next season. Up here in Spokane, we've watched the Lopez twins for two seasons when they played against our WSU Cougars and we're glad the Suns landed one of them. Should be an exciting season!

By the way - thanks for the nice blog you have going and best of luck for the upcoming season!

Don & Sue Williams

Randy - Phoenix
I can't wait for the season to start and I really hope you and DJ get a lot of play time. Other than the outcome of last season, not getting to see you or DJ play much was the worst part for me. :(

Bring us home a championship! :D

-Randy

greg - peoria
excitement is starting to mount and i feel that Alando and DJ are going to play a key role for expanded depth of this team. go suns!

Alex Peralta - Mesa
I'm really looking forward to seeing you play this year. I see you've done real well in the D-League. Putting up big numbers at the beginning, where all the tough talent is. I'm not a big stats guy, but i do like to see heart and hard work. Something i know you have. Keep up the hard work and this summer. Can't wait for the season to start, because this is a SUNS FAMILY.

t0rchy - Germany
I wish you alle the best Alando and hope you play much more minutes this season, you really deserve it!

Give your best to make us Suns fans happy

Seb - London, UK
Hoping to see you get some more minutes next season, i think you and DJ have whats needed in phoenix and i can see you becoming solid players for the suns

keep it up :-)

Ajay - Reno
Hi Tucker,

Last season I was hoping that you guys would get a chance to play, but Dantoni never put you and Strawberry in. That really made me mad. Hopefully, you guys get atleast 10-12 minutes to play.

Thanks for your time

Big AL - Avondale, AZ
With a new coach on board and knowing he helped Flip saunders in Detroit groom young players, do you think you have a chance to crack the rotation? For fans who aren't to familiar with the BIG 10 conf player of the year, what can we all look forward to seeing from you once you do get regular minutes?

Carla - Cottonwood,AZ
HI Alando!

Glad you and your family got to do some site seeing. Sedona's just a 20 minute drive from here. You had to go through a corner of Cottonwood to get to Sedona. *G*

You'll have to explore Jerome next. It's pretty interesting and gives a great view of the entire Verde Valley.Best places to eat up there: Haunted Hamburger or Grapes. IF you decide to check out Cottonwood, or need to stop and eat here..I highly recommend Nic's Seafood or the Tavern Grill. Yummy! They're all owned by the same family and they are wonderful.*G*

I'm happy to hear all the news from a Sun's player point of view. I and other Suns fans are excited about Terry Porter's coming to AZ. Will miss D'Antoni, but something wasn't working. Hoping to see you and DJ play more next year! And with Robin in the mix, I think it's going to be an interesting year. I really had hoped we would get Doran this year, but if not, hopefully we'll get a free agent to help out Nash.

Good luck in Las Vegas! I doubt we'll go, but it's something to consider for hubby's and mine 20 year anniversary trip.

*HUGE HUGS*

Carla

Creeper - 602

justin - el paso
alando is good as well as dj they are the future of this franchise

Justin Weintraub - phoenix
Well with the addition of TP as our new head coach i'm excited to see you and DJ get some real playing time. I can't wait for the new system to take shape and see what the deisel and the run and gun can do together for this years push. "I hope you actually get to read this and it's not jus some PR guy!!" i remember when you went to Steve's charity game in the beggining of last year and really wowed the crowd with your athleticism, hopefully you get a chance to show all of us that style this year. thanks for your time!!

PS: tell AJ Sulka "The Juice is loose!!!"

DAVID PARKER - AURORA,COLORADO. PHX BORN
I WISH YOU COULD'VE PLAYED MORE SO PEOPLE CAN SEE YOUR GAME BUT HEY IT IS WHAT IT IS & THIS YEAR PEOPLE WILL SEE YOUR GAME HOPEFULLY(WE WILL)GET 2 THE BIG DANCE.WELL GOOD LUCK ON THE NEW SEASON

Scott Justice - Surprise
Nice attitude Alando. Hope you get a chance with the new coaching staff this year. Felt bad for you that D'Antoni didn't give you a shot last year. Sounded like you tore it up in the D-league though. I know it's not even close to the same competition but at least maybe it showed you didn't belong down there and should have been up playing with the big boys. Good luck to you next season.

Gary - Los Angeles
Work hard Alando! I expect a good future in your NBA career, I know you can become an awesome player.

Frank - Glendale, AZ
Glad to hear you had a great summer. I hope the new coach gives you a shot. Because I know if he does there will be no regrets

Jose - Phx (but currently in South Bend)
Alando, great post, thank you for sharing with us. I really hope you get a chance this year, a lot of fans are down on your game, but I really haven't had a chance to see you play. What i've seen from your d league time though is impressive. Keep working hard, and do it all for our Lord and you'll see that everything will turn out. God bless you, best of luck!

Joe - Charlotte, NC
Good to read stuff like this. Hopefully the youth gets some time this year cuz it looks like they will absolutely need to get time since it doesn't look like we're going to sign any major FA's.

Sunsforeverfan - Florida
Good to hear about you. Keep working hard and i believe your time will come this year. Good luck and Good Bless You. Gooo Suns.

juls - Philippines
always anticipating your dunk mr. tucker!

with high leap of yours!

jeff - Prescott valley
I want to see the suns organization build around you,robin,d.j. and goran. I think this is going to be your season to show the rest of the league what alondo tucker is about. You should go out there and absolutely smother the opposition defensively. Let your defense feed your offensive game and posterize some people. Ask d.j. if he would consider modeling parts of his game after gary payton, obviously d.j. is bigger, stronger and more explosive but I see similiarities in their games on the defensive end. I believe that the best way for the three of you to cement your status as the future of the suns is for you, robin and d.j. to band together during games and off-nights to develop trust and chemistry on and off the court. Remember, you three are our future and our entire lockdown defense starts with you!

Maxine Kuykendall - Mesa,Arizona
Glad to see you are taking time to include Sun fans. I watched you this past season, and like what I saw in your attitude. I hope we see you in Phoenix for a long time. I know as a "die hard" Sun's fan, I watch everything that is written about the Suns. Glad to see that you are in town and working, that says so much about your determination. Hang in there, and your starting time will come, ask Steve, he use to be 3rd on the roster as a point guard, then he got his break and used it, so keep on working.

Jason-Phoenix -
alando you have fans from all over the world cheering for you. please dont let them down. I'll be rooting gor you!

J Green - Joliet
what's up Doe? Keep up the hard work, and I look forward to watching you play this year and next time you come home I'll have the kemps ready for you.

PARNELL - JOLIET,IL
its your time DOE DO YOUR THANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jim - Dallas, TX
Hope to see a lot more from the younger players on the roster this year. Coach Porter should bring a defensive mindset to their games, and I hope you all take hold. Clearly, that's what the bench has been missing. Stay conditioned. Stay intense. Here's to an exciting season!

Jon - Madison
Nice article--your fans in Madison are still watching. Thanks for the memories and we wish you all the success your work ethic deserves.

Matt Hill - Madison, WI
You guys out there in Phoenix are so darn lucky to have a guy like Do playing for you and representing your organization. He really is something special. I was lucky enough to see him evolve as a person and a basketball player in all the years he was here in Madison. Going to almost all of his games is something I'll never forget. Bo Ryan and Alando even took some time out of a closed practice to come over and visit with my 82 year old grandpa during his junior season. My grandpa said it was nice to see how down to earth and friendly Alando was. Now my gramps has got a picture with the three of them and the memories to go with it. We miss you up in Madtown Do, but wish you the absolute best in everything you do. Phoenix will soon see why you're such a gem to have in their organization. Go Bucky! Go Suns!

GanJin - shanghai
Big fan from China

Tuck,

Buon giorno. Miss you in Madison. Glad to see you haven't changed a bit. Keep it up. Your minutes will come.

We're making the trip to the Virgin Islands to see Bo and the team play in the Paradise Jam. It won't be as fun as the Italy trip, but pretty fun anyway.

PARNELL JONES - JOLIET,IL
GOOD LUCK ALANDO WE ROOTING 4 U AROUND HERE

Minh - Melborune
Hey Alando keep the hard work up.... Your one of the future players for this great franchise and u and dj keep the hard work up. Bad luck last year how mike dantoni had that weird strict 7 man rotation but dont worry terry wont do that.. he lets everyone sum court time. We need u and dj to give us some wing offense and defense

Joe Mannino - Mesa, Az
Just smash on everybody next season.

reggie - chicago
work hard keep your mind on the game d-fense, you will be one of the best,i know you will.

francesco - russi italy
go suns to the victory

Nick Kaizen - Mesa, Az
Its time to give Alando Tucker his time to shine! A guy that spent most of last season, his rookie year, in the developmental league, averaged 27 points in the D-League. What coach in the right mind would start Grant Hill over Alando Tucker? Alando keep the good work up, and you will find that starting spot on the roster.

Amir - Glendale
Great post. just like everyone else on here i hope you and strawberry get more minutes. I thought coach D'Antonio was a smart coach but it ticked me off that he didn't work on his bench. If he wants to get to that next level like Phil Jackson or Greg pop then he needs to learn that he has more options. I feel that you and strawberry have a harder road than Lopez ahead of you for minutes. Suns have a pretty solid starting group and backups down the line except in the front court. Lopez should probably be the 3rd guy after amare and shaq. Keep working hard man. I jus know with you and strawberry putting in the necessary work, you guys will make good contributions on the floor. Good luck this year and i know thinks will be alright because you know and see hard work everytime you put on that uniform. You wouldn't still be here if you didn't and thats your ticket...

Wisconsin Grad - Phoenix
Thanks for the great update. It is good for the fans and kids to see your excellent work ethic. I was quite impressed with the time you spent giving us an update.

Thanks,

Kate

Daniel - Mesa
Great to hear you are doing great Alando and that you are working hard, i wish you and DJ the best of luck during the summer league I know you two will ball it up. I will be cheering the team on, keep up the hard work.

SOHNNY - HARLEM
HEY DID YOU SEE HOW TAQUAN DEAN DID HIS THING IN LIMITED AMOUNT OF MINUTES. NOT ONLY THAT HE LOOK STRONGER THEN THE REST, IT SEEMS LIKE HE PUT HIS WORK IN... I BET YOU IF HE GOT THE AMOUNT OF SHOTS STRAWBERRY AND TUCKER GOT HE WOULD HAVE HAD 30 POINTS... WATCH OUT FOR THIS GUY NUMBER 4.. I WANT TO BE THE FIRST TO SAY I TOLD YOU SO.

John M Adams 4 - Joliet ,IL
GOOD JOB STAYING FOCUS,REMEMBER 2ND PLACE DON'T COUNT NO ONE REMEMBERS.KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK .......

AS WE SAY AT HOME SAY BRA!!!!!!!!

sam - central phoenix
i like that dunk you threw down late in the season with the pass from Skinner. lets see a lot more of that.

epoy - pasig

Trel Wade - Milwaukee
Thats whats up I see you getting ready for season. Keep your head up and continueto work hard and give my team that championship I been waiting for since Charles Barkley was therelol! Good luck Tuck!!!!!!!!!

jeff - Prescott valley
I had a feeling that lue wasn't being honest with the suns about signing,it doesn't matter though. I personally was never that high on him to begin with. Out of the four remaing points that we are rumored to be looking at I would rank cassell obviously as #1 based on championship experience however,he seems like a suns hater and who can forget he and horry and that ainge incident. I really have a positive feeling when pairing livingston with the suns.He is just 22years old and with our advanced medical staff and trainers could get him back to a high level right away. Jay williams would be a talented backup, the question with him is can porter get him to play team oriented basketball first. Stoudamire is a solid veteran who could help. Basically, my pick would be for shaun livingston because he has the most to prove,is the youngest and most talented of the four and could create mismatches in the backcourt for us. I know we wouldn't be considering him if we didn't believe he could come back and play very well. He obviously has alot of heart and toughness to make it back from an injury like that and if we could maybe bulk him up a little,he wouldn't be so suceptible to injury. Let's go get him and end up with a steal in free-agency this season.
