Robin Lopez is someone who will help us right away. It's rare to find an active 7 footer who can run and defend, so we felt fortunate that he fell to us at 15. Robin will provide something we don't have - a versatile big guy who can get out on the perimeter to defend screen and rolls, but who also has the size and mentality to protect the rim. He's still raw offensively, but he has a decent touch on a 15 foot jump shot and he is very good at keeping balls alive and scoring on offensive rebounds. Robin will complement Shaq and Amare nicely because he plays away from the ball, preferring to do a lot of dirty work. Terry Porter expects him to contribute right away, so our depth will be greatly enhanced. Robin told us a month ago when we worked him out that he was dying to come to Phoenix, so he got his wish - as did we. This is going to be a great fit. >> Video: Inside the Suns' War Room As soon as we chose Robin, we set out to climb high enough in the second round to land Goran Dragic, a Slovenian point guard. Because Goran doesn't have a buyout in his contract with Tau Ceramica - a Spanish professional team - until next year, he wasn't projected to go in the first round. Still, we had him ranked as the second best point guard prospect in the draft after Derrick Rose. Our Director of Scouting Todd Quinter saw Goran compete in a camp in Italy two weeks ago and came back just raving about him. Our Sr. Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin had also seen him last summer in the European Championships, and he was equally impressed. We proceeded to arrange for a private workout last week, flying Goran to Phoenix from Slovenia. He literally spent 17 hours traveling here, spent the night, worked out and flew home. Goran didn't work out for any other NBA teams, because he wanted to play for the Suns. He's a huge Steve Nash fan and would like to learn under Steve as his backup. (He is also represented by the same agent, Bill Duffy). >> Video: Watch Goran's private workout We literally called every team with a pick before ours at 48, hoping to move up to take Goran. We were unsuccessful for a long time, and we were losing faith as the round unfolded, thinking that he would be gone. But finally San Antonio agreed to a deal, and we got our man. We believe that Goran has the potential to be our starting point guard in the future, so to fill such an important position with a second round pick would be a coup. The next step is to work to try to secure Goran for next season, which is possible. As I mentioned, he doesn't have a buyout in his contract, but he and his representatives can negotiate one with his team. We're hopeful that something could come about which would allow him to play for us next year, but we'll see. If not, we will definitely have him for the following season. All in all, it was a very successful draft. We still have several spots to fill through free agency, but we feel much better about our depth and the overall versatility of our roster. Starting July 1st we can begin to pursue free agents, and we'll be looking at backup point guards and wing shooters, and potentially another big man. Even though we don't have a lot of money to spend, we do feel we can add a key player or two. There is plenty of talent available, and most NBA teams don't have much cap room this summer. Being a good team in a great city, we obviously have a lot to offer here in Phoenix. Players want to come here, so we'll have an opportunity to improve our team with two or three signings. As free agency unfolds, we will have a team participating in the Las Vegas summer league from July 11th to 19th. Igor Kokoskov and Dan Majerle will coach the team, which will feature Robin, DJ Strawberry and Alando Tucker. We're excited to see Robin for the first time, and we think DJ and Alando are making great strides as they head into their second years. Those three will be joined by a group of free agents that Griff and Todd are currently putting together. We're going to continue working hard all summer to put the best possible team on the floor for you in October. Thanks, as always, for all your support. Enjoy the summer, and Go Suns! Sincerely, Steve |

Jason - Phoenix
It sounds like we did pretty well. Robin can be protection for Amare's subpar defense while Amare makes up for what Lopez doesn't have in offense. Although noth players could get better on the opposite side of the ball in due time. Dragic has the potential to be a great steal, I really hope he comes over to us this year.
Karen - Phoenix
Steve, thanks for letting know more about the 2 players we drafted. I trusted that you and your staff make the best choice for the team.
Jandaman - In front of his computer
I like the Lopez pick, because he fills a need.
Most Suns fans wanted David Lee, if there was to be a trade with the Knicks. Well, Lopez isnt Lee, but they share similarities. Lopez is even taller and younger.
Dragic is fascinating and I wish he can make it to the team next season. Suns had him as 2nd best point guard behind Rose, and was desperate enough to trade up for him. And as stated by Kerr, his lack of buy-out is the main reason some teams backed off... oh well, fingers crossed he turns out well, he reminds me a cross between Ginobili and Parker already....
dexter - philippines
damn i wish i can already watch doran in suns uniform this october.
robin is a great pick up heck even if brandon rush was available i would still pick robin because he can already make impact with just his defense and shotblocking and etc, we are on a win it now situation it was really better with robin.
i just hope we never use diaw as center again, horrible move. give him the SF spot!
me - philippines
Acquiring Robin and Dragic seems to be very promising for what this team needs. The idea of having a guard to replace and learn from Steve Nash himself is an idea that will hopefully solidify and make efficient the suns' momentum.
Apart from the core of the team still being there, i personally think that with the team's new faces will add up to the team's success, especially considering the other teams in the league.
Rest assured that we can only hope and trust in the team this year! I'd like to think that we can really make a big impact! Cheers!
omega - Avondale, Arizona USA
Hey Dexter "Mabuhay".
I agree with all your comments, sugestions, and opinion, as a big Phoenix Suns I can only say thank you everyone for making all these happen. I can't wait to see the upgraded Phoenix Suns team next season. I was a Boston Celtics fan until I moved here in AZ on July of 1986. Go suns!!!
Tato - São Paulo, Brazil
These two rookies seem very promosing. Nevertheless, what Suns need to win a title is a coordinated defense and consistent tempo in the attack. Ups and dows are unusually frequent.
Mr. Kerr please bring Joe Johnson back, some guy (s) with Bruce Bowen type of defensive skills and a sub center capable of maintaining Shaq dominance.
Good luck and kudos from Brazil.
John - Tucson
I like the draft picks, but we still have basicly the same team that hasn't been able to "win it all" the last few years. Hopefully the coming moves will bring a major piece that the suns have been missing, and not just role players.
Sunny Wolf - Los Angeles
I like this new little dragon guy (Dragic). I watched his workout and you can tell he is a crisp and sound player. I don't think we need to search for a swing man since 3D can play every position on the court. Dexter is right, Diaw is an upgrade when you compare him to Marion. Keep in mind Marion is my favorite player in the league. I think 3D and Nash are the best moves the former Coach/GM left us with. I am ready to see Nash become more of a shooter than a facilitator because we need a defensive frame of mind now. Is it me or did Rondo remind anyone else of Strawberry in the Championship. I listened to LA sports analyst yesterday saying Phoenix is one of the teams in the west that would fall off this year. What they don't understand is that the last few years have been a fall off.
Steve, keep Barbosa please!!!
Jereym - phoenix
Steve,
My brother and I seen you and the coaching staff walking around at lunch time on friday. We wanted so badly to congradulate you guys for the draft but did not want to make a scene or disturb your conversations. So here it is. Congrats on the draft, I am really pleased with what you and the other staff members did. I hope the new players come ign and can produce in some respect right away.
Thanks
Randy - Savannah, Ga
I am slightly pleased with the suns draft night, but I think that our attention needs to be focused on filling the wholes that we have on the team. We need a scoring shooting guard and we need to ask Shaq what is his focus is it to win another championship or other things. His is by far not the reason we got eliminated in the playoffs, but I think we need to restructure his deal to bring free agents to the team I honestly believe that we are maybe 2 players away from a ring. So if we can create cap room and bring some guys like Leoul Dang or Ben Gordon. But we need help e two guard spot. So lets stay focused on the task at hand and Steve I am moving back to Phx at the start of the season how do I get on the list for season tickets?
sasha - Ljubljana, Slovenia
I think it is a great thing that Phoenix landed Dragic, and maybe he will be able to come to Phoenix because there is some dispute over his contract with TAU Ceramica. His former club, Slovan Ljubljana did not agree with him leaving the club for Spain, there was a big dispute here in Slovenia and the court decided that he is still a Slovan player. I really wish him good luck in Phoenix, it'll be nice to have another Slovenian player in my favourite NBA team after Marko Milic was a Sun from 1997-99.
M & M - Scottsdale
Great picks Steve. Still have one questions, with Lopez only shooting 55% free throws, what is your plan to handle the hack-a-Shaq situation?
Brunsy - Orr, Minnesota
My Wife and I have been Suns fans for about five years now and have never been as excited in the off season as we are now. Mr. Kerr, your doing a great job and thank you for bringing in a "D" minded coach but also being commited to playing the "Hustle and Flow" game of our Suns. Twice a season we make the 8 hour round trip drive to Minneapolis to see the Suns. Can't wait till November. Go get that sharp shooter in free agency so we can once again spread the floor.
GO SUNS!!!!!!!
Nathaniel - White Plains, NY
I was pleasantly pleased to see the suns draft Robin Lopez in the nba draft. Im a die hard suns fan; being 27 my fanhood runs back all the way to the barkley, kj, and dan marjele days. I wont lie; i am an avid shawn marion fan, and was pretty upset when he was traded, but it seemed to have worked out. Lopez should be a great compliment to shap and amare, and should allow us to rest shaq during the regular season. I do not understand drafting dragic; why draft a player who might not play until season after the next? Anyways, good job steve; cant wait for next season!
Trey - Santa Maria, CA
Everyone keeps talking about us getting a shooter on the wing. James Jones anyone? I heard someone from the Suns organization say that we missed his presence on the team just a couple weeks ago, and now he has opted out of his contract in Portland. He can play some D, help on the defensive glass, and can really stretch the floor. I think it would be great to bring back Junior.
Apache - Phx
Goran looks like an interesting player. Hopefully he can make it here this year. As far as the Lopez twins go, I think Robin might do better just because he's in an ideal situation to learn from Shaq and grow as a rookie.
Stephen Ballif - Salt Lake City, Utah
Sweet draft! I'm super excited to see Lopez and Dragic play. I'm praying that Goran makes it over here for the coming season.
My concerns are regarding Barbosa and Diaw. Please do not trade either of them. I don't understand why we are looking for a new 3 point shooter. I'll admit that Barbosa shouldn't play the point to back up Nash, but should definitely play the 2 guard. He's a great shooter. I don't think he's come close to his potential, especially defensively. If Dragic comes, I don't see a need for any more point guards on the team.
Diaw will be great too, especially as a backup to Grant Hill who may have unexpected injuries. He did something against the Spurs last season that no other Sun could do. He could score at will in the post.
I love the Suns and think they will win it all this year. Keep up the fast ball, but focus on defensive improvements in preparation for next season.
Seb - London, UK
Its a shame Goran's got himself a $1.5million buyout cos he looked awesome in the workouts, definatly one for the future.
And im glad PHX is thinking D with Lopez.
I really hope 3D & LB dont go, cos they both contribute so well to the team.
Really looking forward to 08/09 :D
justin - texas
good pick but this time dont trade him and actually play robin lopez
evan - kentucky
phoenix needs to win a title soon with steve nash approching retirement
diaw was great in the playoffs but why not in the season?
if you look at phoenix 3 years ago, they were the best fast break team in the nba and still are but now you have folowers such as golden state and the west has a faster tempo
the suns have most of the right fits and pieces to winning a title but they have to act fast
if they don't win this year, i don't see them winning one with this team
have you guys had thoughts of trading for jj redick in orlando i think he would fit in perfect to their offense
diaw isn't a 3 lebron, carmelo, and pierce are a 3 they should trade for a backup 3 or a starter over hill to get another offense or defense player {not the 3 players i just mentoined}
Amanda - Flagstaff
great job on the draft steve, I hope lopez and Dragic do a great job on the suns. My only concern is the trade rumor regarding Barbosa. He's one of my favorite players on the suns and I really hope you don't trade him away. I see great potential in him and I think he can improve and turn out to be a star player in the NBA. Please, Please, PLEASE don't trade barbosa!!
jon - phils
with steve kerr doing the thinking, im confident that the future will be brigther soon for the suns. from shaq to porter to the assts to the draft. good work steve. hope you could trade diaw for a better defender. offense will not suffer since nash still orchestrate the offense. go suns
Umer - Gilbert, AZ
Mr. Kerr,
This years draft was great. Please try your best to get Dragic (I like him better than D.Rose). I hope to see the Suns win the campionship in 2009, and beat the Spurs 4-0. Do you think we can do something big (Like the Shaq trade) to get a great SF, like Loul Deng or Carmelo Anthony (sinsce Denver is trying to get rid of Melo), just asking.
Thanks for your time, GO SUNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jeff - Prescott valley
two things I was curious about, when team usa starts play will we as fans get a chance to see dragic in international competition. The other was are there any undrafted rookies that might be playing on our summer league team.Players like chris lofton, davon jefferson, othello hunter, and jamont gordan.I am also wondering if their are any 6-7 to 6-10 undrafted wing players with deadly shooting skills we might invite to our summer league, I was thinking about a certain european player that was slated to go to anywhere from 35 -40 in the second round of last thursday's draft. I just can't remember his name right now.
jeff - Prescott valley
concerning the previous article i wrote about undrafted rookie invitees to our summer league team, the name was damjan rudez an athletic 6-10 small forward that can shoot the lights out. Mr. kerr please take the time to check him out,he could end up solving our problems finding a wing that can shoot. He would most likely be a bargain as an undrafted rookie and playing on our summer leaugue team we wouldn't lose anything by trying him out. He is probably a steal for whoever aquires his services. He is from croatia.
Jonathan Kaswani - Phoenix
Great!
But it will be better if you would let Shaq plays more next season.
Matthew - San Diego
I think the suns need to seriously go after unrestricted free agent Corey Maggette. He has the ability to get to the free throw line at any time (and makes them), shoot the three at a consistent rate, and defend. At 6-6, Corey would take over our starting small forward position. He would give us almost the same swagger as did Shawn Marion; a high flyer, defender, and the last shooter we need to complete this championship caliber team. Nash would once again have a reliable target on his aly-oops, and we would dominate the league with our starting 5. Nash- 17 ppg and 11 asst per game, Bell-12 ppg, Maggette- 22 ppg and 5 reb, Stoudemire-25 ppg and 9 reb, and finally O'Neal- 13 ppg and 10 reb. Our bench would still be strong with Diaw and Barbosa being our main targets. But now with Robin Lopez, Amare and Shaq have a steady backup as well. The only position we need to fill now is the point guard and there aren't to many solid possibilities. If Kirk Hinrich wasn't too expensive he would be good, but someone like Tyronne Lue would be fine. In conclusion this year promises to be the a very good (and possibly the last) chance for the suns to go all the way. Best of luck to our new coach Mr. Porter and to Mr. Kerr.
Matthew
Jonathan Kaswani - Phoenix
Great!
But it will be better if you would let Shaq plays more next season.
-
take stephon marbury if available---he can get rejuvented
take najera...we need his energy
ben gordon would fit our system also...
Good Luck
Aaron - San Antonio, Texas
OMG!!!
Goran is going to be a star. Learning from Steve Nash he will tear it up coming off the bench. hopefully he can come over next season.
Robin Lopez just needs to develop more on the offensive side. His defense is probably up there with marcus camby and tim duncan.
I know im from san antonio and i get so much crap for being a suns fan. if not next season the season after suns will have a ring!!!
Sunny Wolf - Los Angeles
So is Hill on the team or not? I'm obviously confused. I think we need extremely athletic types like Marion who can shoot the lights out. If our bench isn't loaded with them then we are wasting our time keeping Nash as a starter. That's right I said it. Nash needs at least two guys on the perimeter in order for his amazing penetration to work. We are at a point where we can become the biggest team in the West so let's gain some idenity by making the tough choice. Let's keep it real Nash does not play defense. If we want to improve from last year, Little Nashy needs to commit to some D. What happens is Nash let's some fast guard blow by him and one of our bigs gets the foul. I think Diaw shoud be our starting point. Barbosa and Bell hold down the two and three. If you give SHAQ,STAT,Bell, BArbosa, and Diaw a season to get things going, I know we will win a championship or two.
We can keep Nash and Hill for that experience to get over the hump with Lopez backing up the Bigs.
Whose with me?
Joey Branum - Phoenix, Arizona
I think the moves in the draft help us defensively, which the Suns are in desperate need of this year, to even stand a chance against teams like the Spurs, and Lakers come playoff time, but the absence of Shawn Marion was definitley missed and finding a player similar in what he offered us should also be a priority. Grant did a great job this year, but once again, like so many times in his career, he ended up on the bench due to injury.
Rumors are the Suns interested in maybe a sign-and-trade with Leandro to gain the services of Corey Maggette this season, and I believe that may help to fill the void that was left when Shawn was traded to Miami.
Barbosa is a good scorer, and very quick, but his confidence issues are still hindering him from becoming an elite scorer in the league, and that concerns me. Corey can bring another option on offense when Steve is taking his usual rests, as well as rebounding and defense. Also with the pickup of Dragic, that brings a legitimate backup for Nash, and will help if Barbosa is not there as the ball handler when Steve isn't on the court.
I also think the development of players like DJ Strawberry, and Alando Tucker are critical for the teams success in the future. DJ is a good defender, and Alando was a good offensive player in college, and I believe with more playing time, can contribute a great deal, creating depth that is needed to make a long run into the playoffs.
All in all Steve, I think that the Suns are headed in the right direction, but only time will tell how good this team can truly be.
nick ptak - tempe arizona in the suns headquarters
steve go sign chris duhon as the first option tyronn lue as the second option and sign one of the following players ( A MUST IF WE WANT TO WIN A TITLE) james jones james posey jarvis hayes
also consider a sign and trade for magettee for barbosa because one thing we lack is a slasher who can get to the foul line and get other guys players in foul trouble. mags is a beast and would be worth trading a mentally weak player in barbosa. I'm sorry he just is mentally weak. or trade barbosa for martell webster and either steve blake or sergio rodriguez.
DO IT KERR
PAUL WILSON - TWIN FALLS IDAHO
lets get james jones back and micheaL FINLEY AND JAMES POSEY,
Sunswin - Phoenix
Hi Steve, congrats on a great draft! I am looking forward to seeing how the new pieces will fit in. Best of luck in getting Dragic this season. I agree with a previous comment to bring back James Jones if at all possible. With Junior and a reliable veteran back up at PG and I think you are set. I hope to see Sean Marks back next year as well to provide an occasional offensive boost from the interior bench players.
Marques Morgan - San Francisco Ca
I hope we ae going after Lebron,Chris Paul, or Dwade in 09 since shaq an nash are both free agents the two picks are ok..but with CDR dropping all the way to 40 i dont see how he wasent obtained.I know nothing about Dragic but from reading the comments im very excited. An with Lopez i think we could have traded down a few spots an still get him as well as another pick
Tahmid - Edison, NJ
First I would like to congratulate the Suns for acquiring Robin Lopez and Goran Dargic in the draft because it seems like Robin shall provide better defense and over that Goran has the potential to become a starting point guard for the suns in the future. I would also like to say that the suns need Barbosa to step up next season and score big consistently like he did last season for the Suns , so that the can win it all. The team needs another big scorer beside Amare and Steve Nash but unfortunately Shaq doesnt seem to be that guy, so the closest guy is Barbosa for his high offensive abilities. Besides all that, they need "Defense" just like the Celtics last season for them to win a title, which I am sure everyone knows. Looking forward to great season and i hope that they win it all!!!
Go Suns!!!!!!!
welmercastillo - melbourne,australia
Lopez,Dragic,Strawberry and Tucker-who said that Phoenix is getting old? With these guys on our bench
we could even make a whole new team, thats how good they are.
I think that Porter should make Tucker start instead of Diaw because Tucker is so much more productive and explosive than Diaw.
This season, we'll kick everyone's asses with our roster by the way it's building up.
royce - philippines
hello mr.kerr and suns
great job during the draft..im really hoping we can get dragic this year..he's a good pick and we need him to help out nash...robin lopez is also a good pick now shaq and amare has help....hope you can invite louis amundson in the summer leauge..
he ave. 2.5 ppg and 3.5 ppg in 5 mpg in the playoofs against detroit..pls mr kerr...hope d.j and alndo will have playing time too
egoy - philippines
What a draft pick.! this season will be horrible for the other. Doran is a big help for suns especially for steve.Tthis will make steve a longer rest to take his breath.
I love suns especially steve. Improve the fastbreak with shaq but focus on defense in preparation for the championshi[ this season.
Mitch - Melbourne, Aus
Great draft choices, but why dont we go after brand? i mean, stoudemire, brand and shaq up front with lopez and diaw coming off the bench... not many teams could contain that.
jeff - Prescott valley
Just read that the court in slovenia handling dragic's dispute ruled him a slovan player. They said he isn't the property of tau ceramica and the slovenian team would let him go for 500k. That's real good news for us suns fans.I still hope we take a look at damjan rudez of croatia, the reason I am pushing for him on the suns vegas team is because his build and shooting ability are very similiar to peja stojakavic. All he really needs to do is add a little weight to his frame, but he could certainly help our suns in their quest for a backup small forward/shooting guard. He's got deadly shooting skills, can handle the ball, and is a creative passer. As an undrafted free agent rookie he has high value with little risk.
-
good job steve
- St george UT
I really want Dragic i rally hope you get him.
But I dont know about Lopez I dont think he is that good. But still this is a good draft. PLEASE GET Dragic!
Robert S - Heber Az, Trinidad Co.
I have a few things to proffer. A. bring back James Jones!!!! Jrs D and prolfic jump shot would really complement the team we have. He has great length for defense of the passing lanes and can go to the rim if need be. B. Sasha in Slovenia, thanks for being a fan and Marko was a helluva player and is still missed by this suns fan. he reminded me of a young Alvan Adams and was really fun to watch!! So thanks for your support, Go Goran!!!!!!!!!!
Birinder - Toronto CANADA
Now that Baron davis is available and has expressed desire to be traded. What do u think if he is in the Suns lineup?
Chad - Phoenix
Get Corey Maggette. Diaw needs to be traded. Often times his inability to produce offense this season and his constant nervous manner where as soon as he touches the ball he likes to get rid of it, hurt the suns. By trading Maggette we would get a very strong forward who has range and has proved his ability to score over the years. I think we would be complete with the aquisition of Goran Dragic, Lopez, and Magette
CARL -
THE SUNS NEED 2 GO AFTER CHRIS DUHON AS BACKUP G,A GOOD YOUNG PLAYER WHO PLAY DEF,
louie - san diego
Steve what do you think about this. We could package up barbosa and diaw and try to make a trade to utah for andre kirileinko. He wants out of utah and this would give us a great defender and a former allstar who is still young and would improve our team dramatically with him and bell being our main perimeter defenders and shag and stat clogging the middle along with terry porters intensity and his defense we could take ourselves from one of the worst defensive teams in the league to possibly the best all the while our offense would still be amazing. Just my thoughts
Louie
patrick - Pilipinas
i suggest having this rotation:
NASH/STRAWBERRY
BELL/BARBOSA
DIAW/HILL
AMARE/?
SHAQ/LOPEZ
we need to get a back up big, back up PG and wing...i'll welcome a trade with Barbosa or Diaw...a good back up for STAT, the rest should go....
chris - Avondale, Arizona
A good draft without a doubt. Now the only thing left to do is to deal barbosa to the clipps for maggette in a sign and trade deal. He fills the last remaining spot that the suns need, they dont need a 3 point shooter; they need a guard who is strong enough to get to the cup and finish and open up lanes for amare and hill to slash through. He also brings the defense from the 2,3 spot also. With this deal it improves the bench and makes the suns a deep team. Nash, magette, hill, amare, and shaq. the bench bell, diaw, strawberry, lopez, and tucker. that looks like a pretty darn good deal to me..
Charles - Phoenix
Awesome Draft Steve, Thanks for sticking to your guns and Getting Robin, If we didn't get a center I knew it would hurt us in the long run.
Congrats again.
Go Suns!
Daniel Yi -
I think steve nash should hog it all the way because he is capable to score easy baskets. Look at Bryant, he hogs but he stinks. He still gets a lot of points. If nash hogs he wil;l have like 40 points per game.
QM - Philippines
Yeah it was great to see Dragic play with the Suns..
And he can be the future for the team.. and it was great to know that he doesnt go to other teams except for the Phoenix, I cant wait him to see play along with this idol/mentor Nash..
I am a bit disappointed on the last run, but not with the team.. I am disappointed on Spurs because they exploited the weakness of Shaq.. damn i hope it will not happen again.. Go Suns.. "Play Ball"
Forever Nash!
Chethan Anantha - Bangalore, India
Steve,
Nice job getting Robin & Goran To Phoenix. i love the way Suns play. Go Suns!
Tom - Ljubljana, Slovenia
You have no idea what you landed this time - Goran vise!!!!!! (Or maybe you do?* when I watch the end of that important phone call ;-)again)
Great move from you and good luck with our best prospect IMO!
Tom
Seann Bewey - Brighton, UK
I'm extremely happy with this draft! I love the video from the war room on draft day! the reaction from you guys when you sealed Dragic convinces me that this guy has the potential to be something special whether it's this season or next.
I love the pick for Robin. I loved Bo Outlaw when he was here even tho he was a terrible offensive player and Robin is a million times better in that regard. We def needed some hustle and D.
I think we were better taking Robin than Rush cos it'll be much easier to pick up a player with Rush's qualities thru FA/trade than it would to find a player that'll bring what Robin does.
If we can't get Goran this year then please please get a backup PG and keep LB at the 2, and Diaw has to play 4 cos he's not a good enough shooter to play 3 consistently although he prob is our best post up/back-to-the-basket player. I agree with previous that Steve needs to look to score more this season.
I can't wait for the new season, the new Suns!
Anthony Daniels - Chandler, AZ
I am having a problem with this sit and wait attitude about the free agency. If we need a back-up point guard that is good enough to back-up Nash then why would you wait. We have people to trade plus if we needed to I would think. It just does'nt make sense to wait and get the bottom of the bag.
Marshall Laister - Gilbert, Az
I am very uneasy about our pick. I do not like to see a specialist player, who can only play one side of the court. I know its the well rounded players that excell and become all-stars. I think we could of done better with pick #15. i look at Roy Hibbert, Arthur from Kansas, and Dorsey is physical and nasty from Memphis. I do think we need size and strength. Roy Hibbert needs to get stronger, but has a much more polished offensive game. Arthur is strong and an excellent defender with a better offensive game. Dorsey could end up the next Charles Oakley. He has the mentality. Robyn a good defensive game with intensity, but the lack of offense to his game will create double teams on Nash and Amare. I really hope it works out, but I'm not very hopeful! I do hope we try to get Junior Jones back. His shot has seemed to reappear. I still LOVE the Suns and you have my support.
Anthony Daniels - Chandler, AZ
I agree with Marshall, we need Jr. back. He would add good perimeter shooting along with depth to the bench and he could sub for Bell and Hill. I think if we had him that it is more likely that he is one of the ones that when Shaq or Amare are double teamed the ball can be passed to and trust to make good shots, I mean since we got Dragic who can't come until next season what do we have to lose.
the jomzster - philippines
GO GET MAGGETTE STEVE, I LOVE BORIS DIAW BUT SUNS WILL BE BETTER OF WITHOUT HIM...
TRADE OUT LB THEN GET CHRIS DUHON OUT FROM THE FREE AGENCY AS A BACKUP FOR NASH..
HOOOOO THIS IS INTERESTING, BARON DAVIS TO SUNS.
AK 47 CAN ALSO BE A GOOD ADDITION TO OUR SUNS, BUT THAT WOULD BE GREAT IF DIAW AND LB ARE OUT.
GRANT HILL? WE NEED A HEALTHY PLAYER ON THE SF SPOT..I LIKE GRANT HILL BUT WE NEED HEALTHY PLAYERS.
IM ALSO EXCITED WITH GORAN..
ROBIN LOPEZ? I DIDNT LIKE HIM AT FIRST AND LETTING GO DARRELL ARTHUR AND GREENE WHO PLAYS LIKE RASHARD LEWIS MIGHT WHAT THE SUNS NEED. THEN I REALIZED, WE NEED 'D'...UHMMN GOOD PICK THEN.
BRIAN SKINNER? I ALSO LIKE HIM BUT LETTING HIM GO WOULD SPARE US MONEY FOR FRESHER PROSPECTS.

Depending on how things pan out in free-agency over the next couple of weeks,I wouldn't mind if we trade barbosa straight up for an unprotected lottery pick next year. Maybe to have a chance at drafting players like brandon jennings, austin daye, demarr derozan or blake griffin.I fully support everything we have done thus far but would really like a highly marketable young star to add to our young talent for next year. Golden state just lost baron davis and might need another guard. D'antoni's knicks need someone he likes for when marbury leaves.Milwaukee could use a combo guard like barbosa. We certainly would have a better chance of success in moving up in next year's draft if we struck a deal before the season starts or at mid-season. Better chance also of increasing revenue, publicity and easily more reliable than waiting and hoping a big name free agent signs with our team. We've filled our team needs very intelligently now we can afford to take a chance on a future star draft pick.
Parker Hancock - Mesa, AZ
Corey Maggete completes this team and gives us EXACTLY what we need with his slashing abilities as well as an above average long range jumper. He is also a tenacious player with the attitude needed to win. Lets make it happen.
Ajay - Reno
I think the draft was fantastic! The only concern that I have is that the suns should keep Dragic and play him as back up to Steve. I think he would do great after watching his private workouts. Thanks for your time
Eric - Philippines
Nice picks for this years draft. Was really hoping you get Robin Lopez for his defensive skills at #15 and hopefully Goran Dragic can join the team this year.
Phoenix is known for its offense. What it lacks is defensive stops and depth scoring. The starting five of Nash, Bell, Hill, Amare, and Shaq is as good or better than any team out there. However, if you look at their average age, a full NBA season will wear them out by the time the playoffs arrives. Bell, Hill, Amare, and Shaq all have a history for injuries and Nash is not what he used to be 3yrs ago when he had younger legs. With the contracts for Shaq, Amare, and Nash, it would be difficult to go for expensive free agents that would paralyze the team financially. Paying the luxury tax is no joke.
We can trade some of the bench players but why risk breaking up the team now when Nash and Shaq will be negotiating for a new contract in a few years.
The team has a young bench core of Barbosa, Diaw, Strawberry, Tucker, Lopez, and Dragic (if he's onboard). To add to the depth, it would be good to see if James Jones and Sean Marks can be back and probably Tyronne Lue as backup point guard.
I believe Phoenix can win the championship next year if it can play with the right mix, balance, hunger, and leadership the rest of the season.
GO SUNS!!!

Steve I hope that our new coach Terry Portor will play more than 7 to 8 guys. Like our old coach Mike D played. Also I hope that he'll give some mins to DJ and Alando i think they cant be great players if they get some time on the floor

I like all the players we have on the Suns. But it's hard to know what we really have because Mike D kept the same people on the floor all the time. I think it would help if the new coaching staff would give the bench players a few minutes each game during the regular season.
It seems to me the Suns of the past had a tendency to be soft on defense because they had to play so many minutes. Unconsciously they decided they needed to conserve energy and they didn't defend as hard. If this is the case, giving bench players more time and also demanding more defense should keep the starters sharp.
I think it is also possible the younger Suns (everyone except Nash, Shaq, Hill, and Bell) could benefit from additional practice, especially on defense. When Marion left, the Suns stopped getting steals and deflections, so this needs to be a point of emphasis at practice.

SHAWN MARION, never should have let him go, he was very valuable to the team, I think the Suns need to do all they can to get him back.
wolfey - van
What about Brian skinner and Sean Marks. Sean marks is a capable offensive centre...competent outside shooter...not so good on defense, slim build.
Skinner is tough inside but not very confident a shooter.
It hard for those guys to play well with so little playing time to develop chemistry

dragic and lopez are the future of the suns....the suns is preparing for the future... its a great pick!

Thank you Mr. Steve Kerr for sharing with us your thoughts on why you picked Robin & Goran. I believe that they will not only have an immediate impact to the team but will also be a great factor to team's future. Now we have a deeper bench and hope to see those guys on the floor. Remember that it's a 82 home & road games before the play-offs and the Championship Trophy. Make every player proud to lift that trophy because they know they were part of that winning run.
Here comes that shining moment for Phoenix Suns!
GO SUNS!!!

I'm a big suns fan! and i see a lot of talent and potential in this team! with shaq and amare and now with lopez will boost the big man performance and with new guard will definitely fill in the shoes of the vetrans! go suns!
Sean - Mesa
Hey Steve,
I love what you have done in the draft and I'm sure that it will benefit us in the future. BUT, what about a consistent pure shooter? Look at the roster. We got Nash who is shooting above fifty and he is pretty much our only pure shooter. We need another one. Bell has been a little more consistent towards the end of the season and I expect more out of him. I love Barbosa and his nephew is on my JV team but he is much too inconsistent and needs too improve a lot of things still. Giricek is a good shooter but also needs improvement. Grant has some shooting skills but they are limited to mid-range. Trust me on this. PLEASE!!! Add another 2 or 3 wing pure shooter and the Suns will be a much more consistent shooting team. Thanks.
stanley - georgia
STEVE KERR -THE SUNS BIGGEST WEAKNESS IS STEVE NASH'S LACK OF DEFENSE AND A THIN BENCH.
AS SO JULY 9TH,2008 THE TOP FREE AGENTS ARE GONE. WE NEED A SCORER WHO CAN PENETRATE AND BREAK DOWN THE DEFENSE.
BEN GORDON WOULD BE A GOOD FIT OPPOSITE STEVE NASH. TRADE BARBOSA AND YOUNG TUCKER FOR HIM.
LUOL DENG WOULD BE AN UPGRADE OVER WHOEVER IS THE STARTER OR BACKUP TO THAT POSITION. I HEAR TALK OF AK 47 BUT DENG CAN DEFEND KOBE BETTER THAN HIM. TRADE DIAW AND RAJA BELL TO LAND HIM. JOSH CHILDRESS IS ANOTHER GOOD STANFORD PRODUCT TO ADD TO THE TEAM. JR SMITH WOULD BE ANOTHER GOOD ADDITION.
BENCH PLAYERS YOU CAN GET CHEAP LIKE JAMAAL TINSLEY TO BACK UP NASH. THE TEAM SHOULD NOT MISS A BEAT. MATT BARNES IS A GOOD DEFENDER AND SHOOTER OFF THE BENCH. PLEASE LET'S MAKE THESE MOVES. THE WESTERN CONFERENCE IS GETTING MORE COMPETITIVE BY THE MINUTE!
manny ruiz - phx, az
I think the Suns are going to win the championship next year.
Jason-Phoenix -
Are we forgetting Linton Jonhson?? He is an excellent young player. he is six eight with a SEVEN FOOT WINGSPAND. he is also athletic. we don't need maggettee. Linton can do what he can. So if we have have linton johnson back up grant hill then thats leaves only one position to sign. back point guard. What do you say?
suns - phoenix
ok, so no duhon, no barry, no brandt, its a little frustrating, that this organization does not try harder to go after players like this. Teams in the west are only going to be harder, with the changes everybody is making and adding to their rosters. Suns need the skills, talent and defense to match and if we keep having players that are just over the hill so to speak, and injury prone, it makes our chances much more slimmer for the next season. I think we should try to get Marion back, what we were missing this season, we sure would get it back next season with him. I always liked the phoenix suns and I have always wanted them to succeed but when the organization keeps making bad choices and decisions for the sake of a dollar, more recent not playing our bench and overworking players, its a turn off
