Top 10 Reasons To Be a Suns Fan

Posted By: Adam Green
May 23, 2007 2:19 PM

Suns fans, things don't seem to be going our way lately. In the last week many of us have been convinced that either the NBA hates the Suns, the franchise is cursed, or that the Arizona Cardinals will win a title before our beloved Suns do.

It's a great time to be a Suns fan of any age.
Well, everybody, I’m not convinced that any of that is true. I also believe things could be much, much worse. So with that, I submit to you the top 10 reasons why it is great to be a Suns fan.

10. Sure the Suns didn’t get Atlanta’s lottery pick this year. But no matter where the Hawks pick next year, that draft choice belongs to the Suns. Sure, the Hawks could make the playoffs and have the pick be farther back in the draft. But the odds of that are about the same as the odds of the Hawks selecting a 6-7 to 6-9 wing player with at least one of their picks. Sure, they already have five players in that height range, but if they draft more of them maybe they won’t need a point guard. Right?

9. Did anyone else watch the Golden State Warriors’ home playoff games and wish our crowd could be like that? Guess what, folks. It can be. If you were at game five against the Spurs then I commend you for helping the US Airways Center as loud as it has been in a real long time. Friends of mine who were watching the game on TV commented on how you could hear the crowd’s intensity through the TV broadcast. That was just awesome. If our home crowd can be like that for one game, why can't it be like that for all of them? Let’s make the US Airways Center rock like the old Madhouse on McDowell. That would really give the Suns a home-court advantage.

8. You get to be a Suns fan. That means you get to watch and cheer for the most exciting team in the NBA! How could that be a bad thing? Remember, professional sports are about entertainment for us, the non-athletic types. Sure, I may drain the occasional three pointer in a pickup game, but nobody would actually pay to see that. Or would they? At any rate, if you can’t enjoy watching the Suns then I imagine you hate puppies and would prefer to live in Communist China. Just throwing it out there.

7. Everybody keeps saying that this was the team’s best chance at a title. I ask, why? I see a team that will only get better. After the game last Friday some friends of mine were talking about the future of the team. We all pretty much agreed that while this team had a chance to be great, so do the Suns of the future. Look at it this way: the only key player that people worry about getting up in years is Steve Nash, and that guy seems to get better with every year that passes. Why will things change next year? Add in an improving Amare Stoudemire, Leandro Barbosa, and Boris Diaw; a consistent Raja Bell, Shawn Marion, and Kurt Thomas, and you have a roster that should be even better next season.

6. STAT, The Matrix, Pike, Dirty, Junior, 3D, the Brazilian Blur…How many teams can boast that same number of great nicknames? If they awarded trophies for the best nicknames on a team the Suns would be champions in a rout.

5. We live in a basketball city. How many people did you see wearing Suns stuff during the playoff run? Everywhere you looked you would see Suns logos; it was great. The pride this city feels for the Suns is fantastic, and I don’t see that going away anytime soon.

4. We could be Celtics fans. Imagine how they feel. Our situation doesn’t seem so bad now, does it?

3. This team won 61 games last season. They won 54 games the season before that. And before that they won 62 games. That averages out to a 59 win pace per regular season. Sure, they haven’t won a title, but when you figure in two trips to the Western Conference Finals as well as a great battle with the Spurs this year, the team has proven they are one of the elite.

2. At least none of us personally got kneed in the crotched, kicked in the heel, or hip-checked into a scorer’s table. There is something to be said for our personal health, right?

1. When the Suns do win that first championship, and believe me when I say it is coming, it will be that much sweeter for all of us. Championship teams are not born overnight; they are formed after years of heartbreak. The Suns have had their fair share these last few years, but that anguish brings the determination needed to become a champion.

This is so great, i am a true suns fan and always will be :)

Steve Zimmerman - phoenix az
Great blog man... Excellent points...

Valerie - Phoenix
Heck yes! I could think of a million reasons to be a Suns fan...I would still be adding to that list on my deathbed. But the Suns are awesome, amazing, and fantabulous. And Phoenix will have a victory tonight as well...Go Jordin Sparks! She WILL win American Idol!!!!!!!!!!!!

-
This is fabulous!! GO SUNS!!

M. Plemmons - Panama City, Florida
Love the top 10....

jess - glendale, az
I don't think the Celtics are good comparsion. They may not be on top of the world now, but look at their history!

Tom Hayes - Mesa
Right on Adam! I couldn't be prouder of the Suns team this year and look at the glass as "half full" rather than "half empty." The true measure of a champion is how many times he gets back up after he's knocked down. Our boys have taken some knocks, but I know with Robert Sarver's and Mike D'Antoni's leadership and the commitment of the team, one day in the not so distant future we'll all be singing the praises of our Suns Championship. Oh what a day that will be! GO SUNS!!

Alisia Trevino - New Bedford, MA
You are so right. The suns are only getting better and with every championship there are heartbreaks. But PHOENIX WILL WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP. My dream is to go to Phoenix and see a suns home game cause we have an awesome crowd and I belong in Phoenix I know it cause that city has so much pride. I live near Boston so all I see is celtics jerseys. I feel proud when I walk into school or down the street with my suns hat jersey and sweatshirt. I love the suns.

anne - chandler
i totally agree. that is why i am a susn fan!!!!! Go suns!!!!!!!!!! u'll be better than ever, cuz ur guy's season is comimng up!!!!

Dr Neville Cramer - Scottsdale, AZ
I agree. Teams take time to jell. Usually 3-5 years of playing together. At least the basic core of the team. I believe many of the Teams in the NBA do themselves wrong by changing too much too soon. Coaches and players are shuttled around the League season after season by impatient Owners and management. One only needs to look at some of the more stable Franchises to see that it pays dividends to change slowly and carefully. Most players in the league are very gifted and need only the right time and place and management to be really excellent!

Megumi - New York
Hey, my heart belongs to the Suns!! (Imagine living in New York for the past few years...) How I wish I lived in Phoenix!!

Anthony - Mesa
SUNS fan 4 Life!!

JOHN S. - SURPRISE AZ
NO REASON REQUIRED, WIN OR LOSE, ALWAYS A SUNS FAN TO THE END.

steph - houston, tx
HAHA i agree :] suns rock

they've put in an amazing amount of effort

and kicked ass!!

Carla - Cottonwood, AZ
Thank you so much. I am so sick and tired of hearing the boo hoo, and let's trade Marion and get more talent. More talent??? What are these people talking about? Where were these people when Marion was up for Defender of the year? Nash MVP3 (which seriously folks, he REALLY SHOULD HAVE GOT THAT AWARD!), LB got Sixth Man, Raja got NBA Defender 1st team, BOTH Nash and Stat got NBA 1sh team, Nash, Stat, and Marion were on the All Star Team. What more talent do these people need??? Diaw needs to get fired up next year.

As far as Matrix is concerned, I am ready to smack the next person that said that Marion was slacking during the Play offs with San Antonio. Excuse me?

His job was to guard Parker. He did an outstanding job! Then during game 4, Marion guarded Parker, as well as help double on Duncan, Grab loose balls, and rebound. Yeah, I'd like to see anyone do what Shawn Marion does and not fall flat on their face in exhaustion. The man is amazing, and I'm be extremely bummed if the powers that be decide to trade Marion to bring the cap down.

We have an excellent team, don't fix something that's not broken. Like Nash said, a patient franchise is a winning franchise. These guys haven't been playing together half as long as the Spurs have...and look what we nearly accomplished.

OK, I'm done with my book. ;) lol

Whew, I need that vent!

Carla *G*

Ivan - Croatia
Proud to be a Suns fan..

jObz - philippines
i hope there won't be any injuries next year....

Scott - Albuquerque, NM
I agree with all that you said, except that the suns are over the salary cap. That means alot of changes could take place. Alot of talk about trading Marion. I think that this is a foolish idea. I think the suns need to get rid of their bench players and bring in some real talent instead. I know that it is easier said than done, but it can be done. I hope and pray that none of the suns get injured next season so that they are at full strength going into the playoffs. I believe that if they can stay healthy again that it will be there time to take the championship. GO SUNS!!!!

Tom - White Mtns.
I'll just say that I hope you're correct on this.

This team has been competitive for most of the past twenty years; a title is due.

Robert S - Heber Az and Gillette Wy
Thank you Adam. For saying what I truly could not articulate due to emotion. Next season we should look forward to more improvement and even better chemistry!!! The core of our team and the Chemistry Club together are a wonder of the NBA world!!! I remember the joy I felt when the D-Backs won in '01 and know we will really feel it when we get the Larry O'Brien trophy home at last!!! Has any one noticed that on SportsCenter and ESPN that NBA coverage has all but disappeared since OUR Suns are not playing. Maybe comissioner Stern should take his PALAVER and move to a different sport!!!!! OUR Suns energize the market worldwide!!!!!!!!!!! GO SUNS 2007-08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND FOREVER!!!! Nash for President!!:)

paul - scottsdale, az
great blog! i just hope phoenix stays with this great team and staff and do not do any foolish trades!

as being a native of phoenix i have seen foolish trades way to many times, i hope your #1 reason will come to forewishion.

lets continue to move forward phoenix!

Joseph Soqui - Winkelman Arizona
You put it all in ten phrases why it is so good to be a suns fan and regardless if they weren't all them things u just'd blogged I still enjoy watching them win or lose that the true definition of a fan threw happy times and heartbreaks but still I hate 2 see them lose but never lose intrest so Good Luck Suns in the next year and lets bring the gold Suns all the way!!!!

Celia - Queen Creek
You've gotta love these guys! They put their hearts into the games and make it so entertaining. In my house, if there's a Suns game on, don't even THINK about disturbing me! The residents in Arizona should be very proud of the team and be grateful that we have such a great bunch of guys representing our great State.

I am proud to say I'm a devoted Suns fan with my son. Yes, we wear the jerseys, have the posters on the wall, have a nice collection of thunder sticks from the amazing games we've gone to, yell at our tv when we can't go and, of course, I sport the purple and orange on my finger and toenails (alternating of course!).

They're very hard not to love. I hope they can get things sorted out in the way that is best for the team in preparation for next years run for the finals. GO SUNS!

Lori Ann - The Fan That I Am ...
Adam - Here are MY top ten reasons to be a SUNS fan, summed up into ONE : I love basketball and I believe in MY team -- always have, always will! The Suns are one class-act and so exciting to watch. No other team compares. In GREAT hope....

Lakita - Illinois
I fell in love with the Suns team about 3 years ago and have been cheering for them ever since. I love their fast-paced intensity on the court. Absolutely my favorite team! I love them all but Barbosa is my favorite. Very much looking forward to next year.

Andrew - Canada
ya, suns fan forever!!!

M.D - NY
I love the suns. What a great group of classy hardworking athletes. The day the Sun's win the NBA title will be amazing, and I know its going happen. They are the most deserving team in professional sports. Steve Nash, marry me!

bob c - Philippines
SUNS fan no matter what.

Josh - Houston Texas
The Suns should have won the nba championship this year but that horry thang screwed it up cause we lost game 5 by 3 points but if we had amare and borris we would have won that game and game 6 go suns im from texas but i hope the suns win next year

Gus S. - North AZ
Was a Suns fan when they started in PHX and will always be a fan through it all. Have my season tickets and can't wait for the next run!

Khaydee - Wiscconsin
Suns fan forever. NBA Championship. Yes, I believe it is still going to happen. SOON!!!!

Suns. We will support you 'till the end. It is just not our lucky year. But we had a good fight!! We salute you guys.. Love yah! C yah next season.

Sher Khan - Los Angeles
I live in Los Angeles, a city dedicated to the Lakers. People give me a hard time, because i support the suns. But even in LA, i just can't help myself from being a Suns Fan. They are truly a great team, and the most fun to watch without a doubt.

Krista - Commerce, MI
I remember going to Suns games at the "Madhouse on McDowell" when I was 3... now I'm 30-something and living in Michigan. Some things never change. I'm still a die-hard Suns fan and will always be. As a teacher in a Detroit suburb, even my kids get into the Suns (especially during playoff). I had a student recently turn in his assignment in true Suns' fashion... in purple and orange with a "GO SUNS!" at the bottom. It truly is a great time to be a Suns fan.. and that time is all the time! Thanks Adam for putting all the best reasons in one place. GO SUNS!!!

Rich Rosenberry - Spring Hill Tennessee
If the Spurs can feel good about a championship this year AFTER all the tricks they pulled, there should be SHAME in San Antonio. The SUNS are the greatest and always will be!

Chris - Chatham, ON
Well another season is history and the chronicles of the Suns quest for the Prize continues. Victory will only be that much sweeter. Although 2007 was a golden opportunity lost it is only a matter of time and statistics until the Suns get over the hump and beyond the Texas nemisis. All along I feared the Suns could fall to Dallas and yet San Antonio takes over the honours! If we feel bad, imagine the play-off hangover in Dallas. I can't wait for next season - both the players & fans will be hungrier than ever. GO SUNS!!!

Julie - Scottsdale
Thanks for the article and the blog. I love the Suns and always will. Their talent, spirit and 'oneness' is such an inspiration. If you haven't read the book "07 Seconds or Less" it is a must read! We are so fortunate to have Steve Nash and Coach D!

David - los angels
man i aint a suns fan but i am a lakers fan. i dont hate on sun fans. like u win or lose ill be a lakers fan forever. i love them. just i dont have lose for nash or R. bell

Anthonie - CA
I can't get enough of my Phoenix Suns. They have the 2-time MVP Steve Nash(my favorite basketball player),Amare Stoudemire A.K.A STAT,the Matrix Shawn Marion, the Brazilian Blur Leandro Barbosa,& other of the great athletic players in the NBA.I will always be a Suns fan 4 life no matter what happens. The Phoenix Suns WILL WIN a CHAMPIONSHIP next year and more years to come!!!!!How we can do that is that we can't have any injuries, especially to Steve Nash, step up our defense, and Steve Nash should have an MVP type of season like the 2006-07 season,2005-06 season, and the 2004-05 season, but of course he is going to have an MVP kind of season and he will win another MVP.Hopefully I make it in the NBA and I wish the Suns will draft me because I could get used to the team and Mike D'antoni I hope is still coach at the time.I am a Phoenix Suns fan 4 life and I know I will stay one.The NBA Championship belongs to the Phoenix Suns next year and seasons after that.GO SUNS and SUNS FANS!!!!!!YOU RULE!!!!!!

Mrs. Blake Lewis - Vancouver, WA
i am a suns fan no matter what. I LOVE THE SUNS!!!

STATman - Sedona, AZ
another reason...As a Suns fan, I belong to a group of fans that are the best in the NBA...SUNS FANS!!

Thiago Pinheiro - Rio de Janeiro - Brazil
I getting tired of always waiting for that title. It was so close in 93 whe that Paxson...well, forget about it.

That team is so fantastic. We may not achieved the title, but I'm proud to be a Suns' supporter.

Noel - Phoenix
I'm introducing myself to you as a young

19 year old full of life waiting to fullfil his

dreams. Let me tell you my story first and foremost. I'm a 19 year old guy who is on a wheel chair at the moment, I was shot in the back in a house party which I didn't want to attend. We were leaving the party when I got shot and fell on the ground instantly realizing that my life had changed forever at the time. I know what you might be thinkin he is a bad kid but, actually I was a 4.0 student high school went to ASU and was attending Phoenix College the semester before. You might be asking yourself why am I telling you my story but you will find out. I always tell myself everything happens for a reason, so I'm trying to keep a positive attitude through all of this happening. It's hard when you wake up in the morning and you realize the precious gift of walking is taken away from you. I was in the Hospital from March 25-day i got shot till May 3. What kept me up in the hospital was watching the Suns play their uptempo style. I'm a really big Suns fan and I appreciate how hard they kept playing through all the adversity. My fondest memory in the playoffs was when STAT and DIAW

sat out game 5 of the Spurs Series and the Suns

battled and battled and almost stole the game from the Spurs. It motivated me in the way that i have to keep battling through everything to achieve my dream of walking, and I'm going to walk again. Let the Suns player know of this, give them the message to keep fighting and working hard and we will be holding that

trophy, with STERN handing the trophy to us. Go Suns and don't you guys give up on the trophy because I certainly am not giving up on the hope of walking...

thank you for taking the time to read this and sending

the message to the Suns. I'm keep working hard to

achiever my dream and so should the Suns..

Sandy - Surprise

What a wonderful article!!! I am soooo

proud of our Suns, and I know a championship

will be heading their way soon.

Antoinette - Phoenix, AZ
The SUNS are #1... They are a great team and it is absolutely GREAT to see them play!! We love and we believe in you... You make the NBA games worth watching... Although, I have no clue who is winning the playoffs these days... LOL...

Bob Delaney - Joey Crawford
Suns are poopy and will get crushed by the spurs every year! hahahahah

mokong - PHX
Suns are losers. They lost to the spurs again and have failed to win the championship for the third time in a row.

The propaganda spread by the Suns management did fool a lot of people into thinking the Suns can be a championship team when in fact they can,t, won't and will never be champions with this game.

Mike and Maryanne duquette - San antonio Tx
After living in Tx for two years..... It has een hard to se all the silver and black!!!! We are true Suns Fans, no matter what!!!!! It will be the best when the championship comes to the valley, even if we cant be there in person we will be there in spirt!!!! Heres to next year and GO SUNS!!!!!

Luca - Forlì - Italy
I guess what we could have done if Barkley was playing now and not 14 years ago with the Phoenix... Jordan was (is) more talented than the whole San Antonio's team, this time we lost because their game has been the same for years and they know each other very well, and not because they've played better. Next year we'll got the ring! Go Phoenix! Siamo i migliori!!!

Lucile - Goodyear
Suns fan forever. The best team in the USA, and the one with the most class.

tim - toronto
Everyone I talk to both in US and Canada say the Suns are the best. Steve was the true MVP and the Suns were the true champions. One guy said, "the suns are the best thing that has happened to basketball in the last decade. They have made the game fun again. I am excited our home town Raptors are following suite!

Kellie - Phoenix,Az
I don't care if the suns never win a title!!! that's not what makes a great team!!! I will always be a SUNS fan!!!

Lori Ann - Sedona Superfan
Khaydee - I'll be looking for you in the first real-time game blog next season. We sure had a lot of fun during that game. I'll never forget how we rallied and tamed a few Suns fans together. I hope to hear from you throughout the draft, as well as summertime. Take good care my friend. Robert S. : You're a hoot big guy ! I always look for your comments as well. Have a great Summer. Be safe and let's all stay in touch via The Suns.com fan blog.

Lori Ann - Sedona Superfan
Did anyone happen to "witness" Game-5 of the Eastern Conference Playoffs tonight ????? OH MY WORD !!! WHAT A GAME LeBron James and his LeBron'aliers played !!! LeBron played the game of his life (his verrrry young life) thus far. WOW !!! I hope my sis in Akron was awake to see this historic double-overtime game !!! GO CLEVELAND .......YA' GOTTA' LOVE THIS GAME !!!

Stay healthy Phoenix --- can't wait 'til next season. SUNS! SUNS! SUNS! SUNS! SUNS! SUNS!

daphne13 - philippines
adam- this is great.... I love your top 10topic.... Im a suns fan ..Win or Lose Suns is the best............^________^

Lori Ann - Sedona Superfan
Regarding my comments to last night's game at Detroit : While I can give you countless reasons to be a SUNS fan, I also am an avid NBA fan as well. Now that our Suns are finished for this season, I MUST watch the entire NBA season play out. If anyone is a basketball fan at all, they would HAVE to say a word or fifty, about the Cleveland - Detroit Game-5 that took place last night. Sure enough, my sister in Ohio, missed that most unbelievable game. Since I didn't hear from her at all after the game, I figured she was either in shock or missed the game (just glad she's okay). The latter turned out to be the case. I spent the better part of the morning, sending her video clips, NBA news, Cleveland news---whatever I could get my hands on. While my heart will ALWAYS remain true to MY PHOENIX SUNS ....in the meantime, my love for the game remains true too. The Suns.com fan blog is simply the best in the league. What better place to post ongoing thoughts about the NBA Playoffs, than right here, at home ?!!! Beth, you missed a doooozy of a game last night. ESPN should be replaying that game today or tonight. Regardless of who your favorite NBA team is, Ya' just gotta' love this game !!! With lots of love from the crazed Suns fanatic and NBA fan at large ....Your sister in AZ.

Chris - Chatham, ON
Just a little weird deja-vu I wanted to pass on to Suns fans. I was watching NBA Classic games on Raptors TV and caught pieces of the 2003 Western Conference finals between the Mavericks and the Spurs. Both teams had star studded lineups (imagine: the Admiral David Robinson & Tim Duncan on the floor together!) and it was a heck of a come from behind victory for the Spurs who went on to blow away the Mavericks that game & win it all that year (as they will repeat again this year!) I never realized that Raja Bell was Steve Nash's teammate back then with Dallas. Guess who the Gatorade Peak player of the game was? None other than Steve Kerr of the Spurs (4 of 4 from 3 point land). I watched Nash and Kerr exchange congratulatory hugs at the end of the game and realized that these 2 individuals are now re-united together as members of the Suns organization. I wish Steve Kerr well in his soon to be announced position as President/GM. GO SUNS!

david - phx
I grew up watching the suns as a young pup,and i know we will win a title in due time my suns fans, and when it happens we shall party like when the d-backs won there first championship BABY!!!!

Sea - Bangkok
You are right!!! Esp. No.5 --> Even I live in Bangkok, I wore Nash jersey during SUNS games. I am falling in love with SUNS and wish I can get my jersey to US Airways... Looking forward to that time.
